This public symposium provided a forum to discuss science‑based research on avian‑solar interactions. It was jointly hosted by the Multiagency Avian-Solar Collaborative Working Group (CWG) and Avian Solar Working Group (ASWG).
The Technical Review of Research Related to Avian-Solar Interactions was held on August 16, 2017, in Sacramento, California.
The objectives of this technical symposium were to:
Slides for several symposium presentations are provided below. Individuals interested in the other presentations should contact the speakers directly.
The CWG was formed in 2016 to promote a better understanding of avian-solar issues and to develop a multiagency Avian-Solar Science Coordination Plan to provide a framework for future research needed to support agency decisions regarding utility-scale solar development. Agencies participating in the CWG include the U.S. Department of Energy; U.S. Bureau of Land Management; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; U.S. Geological Survey; National Park Service; U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs; U.S. Department of Defense; and state energy and wildlife agencies from Arizona, California, and Nevada.
The Avian Solar Work Group (ASWG) is a collaborative group of environmental organizations, academics, utility scale solar companies, and solar industry representatives formed in 2015. The purpose of the ASWG is to advance third party independent and coordinated scientific research to better understand how birds interact with solar facilities. Given the threat that climate change poses to avian species, participants will work with the shared interests of protecting avian species and developing solar projects in an environmentally responsible and a commercially viable manner.
